The inclusively designed green belt connects Freiham and Neuaubing.
Freiham
Have you ever travelled on the S-Bahn S8 from Munich to Ammersee? Then you will certainly have seen the huge construction site between Neuaubing and Germering. The new Freiham district will be built there by 2040 on an area the size of 250 football pitches. Over 25,000 people will live here and 15,000 people will work here.
Our tour takes us through Freiham Nord, the area of Freiham where over 10,000 flats will be built in the next few years, via 16 stops. We start at Aubing station and then continue along the green belt to the new neighbourhood centre. From there, we walk past the combined heat and power plant to the Freiham estate, which gives the new neighbourhood its name.
Freiham Nord is being built in two phases: The first phase has been under construction since 2016. A total of 4,500 flats for around 12,000 residents are being built on 46 plots. Around 6,200 flats for around 16,000 residents are planned for the second phase. Freiham will also have a landscaped park the size of Westpark and a recreational bathing lake.
The development of the new neighbourhood dates back to the 1960s. At that time, the state capital of Munich purchased the last contiguous areas of land in the urban area:
As one of three ‘relief towns’, Freiham was intended to help alleviate the shortage of housing. However, the project was then put on hold and only resurrected from its slumber in the early 1990s.
