Have you ever taken the S-Bahn S8 from Munich to Ammersee? Then you have probably seen the huge construction site between Neuaubing and Germering. The new Freiham district will be built there by 2040 on an area the size of 250 football pitches. More than 25,000 people will live here one day and 15,000 will work there.
Our tour takes us through 16 stops in Freiham Nord, the area of Freiham where over 10,000 flats will be built in the next few years. We start at the Aubing train station and then continue along the green belt to the new neighbourhood centre. From there we walk past the combined heat and power plant to Gut Freiham, the name-giver of the new district.
Freiham Nord is being built in two phases: The first phase has been under construction since 2016. A total of 4,400 flats for about 12,000 residents are being built on 46 construction sites. In the second phase, more than 6,000 flats are planned. In addition, Freiham will have a landscaped park as large as Westpark and a swimming lake for recreation.
The development of the new district dates back to the 1960s. At that time, the state capital of Munich bought the last contiguous land in the city area:
As one of three "relief towns", Freiham was supposed to help alleviate the shortage of housing. However, the project was then put on hold and not brought out of its slumber until the early 1990s
