Pedestrians and cyclists have priority in Freiham, as do buses, trams, underground and suburban trains.
S-Bahn station Freiham
Freiham is a city of short distances. With amenities close to homes, attractive footpaths and cycle paths and a comprehensive bus and rail network, the aim is to make life without a car possible.
The Freiham S-Bahn station was opened in 2013 on the S8 line to Herrsching. Freiham is also served by the S-Bahn S4 (Aubing stop) and various bus lines. There are also plans to extend the underground line 5 from Laimer Platz via Pasing to Freiham. And there is Munich's first cycle-only road.
To avoid private underground car parks and traffic searching for parking spaces, so-called neighbourhood or collective car parks will be built in the second phase of the project. If there are no underground car parks, large trees can be planted in inner courtyards, which in turn is good for the climate. In addition, without underground car parks, more water can seep into the ground; the ground stores the water like a sponge and releases it again during periods of heat, which ensures cooling (‘sponge city principle’).
There are to be two types of neighbourhood garages: smaller ‘parking racks’ with parking spaces for residents and larger mobility houses that also have parking spaces for visitors and various sharing services. Car parks allow parking spaces to be stacked in a small area.
