Munich lies on a great natural treasure: 2,000 to 3,000 metres below us, in permeable limestone layers, there is a huge deposit of 80 to 100 degree hot water from which heat can be obtained in an environmentally friendly way. The energy centre on Bodenseestraße uses this inexhaustible deposit and has been supplying Freiham and neighbouring areas with geothermal energy since autumn 2016. Via two boreholes, water at a temperature of more than 90 degrees is pumped up from a depth of over 2,500 metres and conducted through heat exchangers. The Freiham energy centre is the first building block of Stadtwerke München's district heating revision. The energy tower in the centre, a transparent steel construction, is enclosed by a moving landscape with a green wall.
