The Olympic Park was built for the Olympic Games that took place in Munich in 1972, on the Oberwiesenfeld in the north of Munich. The park represents the awakening of a young, optimistic democracy and is a symbol of peace and freedom. As an architectural masterpiece, the ensemble has been listed as a national monument since 1998, and is to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Günter Behnisch, Fritz Auer, Carlo Weber, Erhard Tränkner and Winfried Büxel of the Architektengruppe Olympiapark, and the landscape architect Günther Grzimek created, from 1967 on, a world-class architectural and landscape planning ensemble. All sports facilities are situated harmoniously in the topography. Careful landscaping and planting create a bridge to the Alpine foothills. The cheerful colours and orientation pictograms also chime with the spirit of the time. Today, the Olympic Park is not only a popular place for leisure and recreation, but also an important location for concerts, festivals and sporting events.
