Architectural masterpiece: the Olympic Park is to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Olympic Park
The Olympic Park was built on Oberwiesenfeld in the north of Munich for the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. The park symbolises the dawn of a young, optimistic democracy and is a symbol of peace and freedom. As an architectural masterpiece, the ensemble - listed as a historical monument since 1998 - is to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
With the Olympic Park, a group of architects led by Günter Behnisch, Fritz Auer, Carlo Weber, Erhard Tränkner, Winfried Büxel and landscape architect Günther Grzimek created a world-class architectural and landscape planning ensemble from 1967 onwards. All the sports facilities are harmoniously embedded in the topography. Careful landscape modelling and planting create a bridge to the foothills of the Alps. The cheerful colour scheme and orientation pictograms also reflect the spirit of the times. Today, the Olympic Park is not only a popular place for leisure and local recreation, but also an important venue for concerts, festivals and sporting events.
