31 Conollystrasse
On September 5, during the 1972 Olympic Games, Palestinian terrorists broke into the Israeli team's quarters at Conollystrasse 31 and took eleven athletes hostage. During the hostage-taking and the subsequent rescue operation at Fürstenfeldbruck military airfield, all eleven Israeli hostages, a German policeman and five of the eight assassins died. The Olympic Games were suspended for one day and a memorial service was held to commemorate the victims. The games were then continued with the approval of the Israeli government so as not to bow to terrorism. The 'Munich Massacre' is commemorated today at various locations in the Olympic Park.
