The building, designed by Munich architects Christ & Karg, was the first ecumenical church centre in Bavaria - in keeping with the spirit of the games: cheerful, cosmopolitan and democratic. Inspired by the twelve apostles, the roof rests on twelve pillars. The supporting structure for bridging the resulting spans is a spatial framework from the Mero company, which is typical of industrial buildings of the time. During the 1972 Olympic Games, the Ecumenical Church Centre hosted Christian, Jewish and Islamic services in 14 different languages. Today, the centre houses a Catholic and a Protestant parish.
