Olympiazentrum subway station during a major event, 2006
Olympiazentrum subway station
The 1966 bid to host the Olympic Games gave the city of Munich's underground plans a huge boost. There had never been a subway in Munich before, and the U3 line was opened in 1972, at the end of the Olympiazentrum. The circular reliefs on the walls, and the floor panels are made with Isarkies (river stones from the Isar) and chime with the spirit of the time. The original orange plastic seat shells have since been replaced. All U3 subway stations are now listed buildings, recognising that Munich’s listed buildings are now also below and not just above ground level.
