Track Hall in the main station
Despite all the far-reaching modernisation work, one thing remains the same: Munich's new main station will also be a terminus station: Trains will leave on the same tracks they arrived on.
The concourse will also remain the same. Built between 1958 and 1960, the two-aisled building is now a listed building and is in urgent need of refurbishment. In particular, the supporting structure of the roof needs to be reinforced. It is called the Krupp roof because of the construction company of the time. It spans almost 30,000 square metres - an area that is exposed to immense loads, and not just during snowfall.
Until now, the flat roof has only been held up by edge supports and a row of centre supports. Because of this rare construction, the track hall has the status of a technical monument. It is currently being examined whether, in addition to improved stabilisation, the renovated hall should also have a footbridge as a second crossing.
