Karlsplatz - also known as Stachus - is not only one of the most important hubs for local transportation, but also offers a place to pause or stroll. This was not always the case. With the 1963 urban development plan, the city council committed itself to moving away from motorized traffic and rebuilt the square, creating the large fountain complex. The Karlstor, one of the last remaining city gates, leads into Munich's bustling pedestrian zone.
