Karstadt Schützenstraße
Opposite the station square is the historic Hermann Tietz department store, known as ‘Hertie’. The department store was popular because of its extensive range of goods and because it provided convenient and sheltered access to Karlsplatz. The building stood empty for a long time. Now there are plans to convert and renovate the listed department store. The extension built in the 1970s between Schützenstraße and Prielmayerstraße will be demolished and replaced by a new multi-storey building. The result will be a mixed-use building with offices and retail space. The restructuring of the former Karstadt-Kaufhof complex will also have an impact on the surrounding area. A new neighbourhood is to be created. New footpaths between Schützenstraße and Prielmayerstraße, attractive uses for the ground floor areas, lots of greenery, new trees, seating and public roof gardens are being planned to revitalise the neighbourhood. The arcades along Schützenstraße and Prielmayerstraße are to be retained.
