Luitpoldblock
The commercial building on Brienner Straße, which houses the eponymous Café Luitpold, represents constant change throughout its 200-year history. When the entrepreneur Joseph von Utzschneider built the block in the classicist style in 1812, it housed a brewery with a beer garden and various trades. Later known as "Café Luitpold," the place attracted many artists and the Munich women's movement.
In 1930, it was allowed to open as the first boulevard café on Munich's streets. After the war in 1960, Marika and Paul Buchner give it new life with a Grand Café and an American Grillroom. The facade is adapted to its original state and architect Reinhard Riemerschmid creates contemporary modernism in the interiors. 50 years later, architects Demmel and Hadler redesign Cafe Luitpold once again.
