Fünf Höfe
The Five Courts - Viscardihof, Amirahof, Poriahof, Maffeihof and Perusahof - represent the contemporary counterpart to the historic courtyards of the Residence. The architects Herzog & de Meuron gutted the once closed block and then restructured it. This created an ensemble of different courtyards and passages with different lines of sight. Around 60 percent of the old building fabric was retained. The restructuring followed the principles of the urban European city anchored in the city center concept, with a diverse mix of uses. One highlight is the sculpture by Ólafur Elíasson. Standing under the eight-ton spiral “Sphere“, one looks into a space of its own, the inside of the sphere. The artist wants to symbolize the interconnectedness of our world.
