Marienplatz
Marienplatz forms the center of the east-west axis between Isartor and Karlsplatz. On the northern side of the square, the New City Hall was built between 1867 and 1909 by the architect Georg von Hauberrisser in the neo-Gothic style. On the eastern edge, the Old Town Hall closes the square. After World War II, many historic buildings around the square were destroyed and Marienplatz was redesigned in the 1960s and 1970s.
The so-called Old Town Guidelines serve as orientation for building projects in Munich's Old Town ensemble, so that character and typical features such as facades, arcades, courtyards, public spaces or the roofscape are preserved for the future. Especially at the Marienplatz it is recognizable how differently building culture is defined in different times.
The Hugendubelhaus as an example was rebuilt after the war. Since May 2017, the commercial building has been displaying a modern, sleek look instead of the little-appreciated facade from the 1970s.
