Galeria Kaufhof Marienplatz

Kaufhof Marienplatz has been located at Kaufinger Straße 1-5 opposite the town hall since 1972. Hardly any other building in the historic city centre caused such a stir as this one. The striking façade led to a public debate at the beginning of the 1970s, to which architect Josef Wiedemann responded in a "justification essay". How modern can Munich be to still remain Munich? Munich-born Wiedemann, a key pioneer of post-war reconstruction, wanted to combine the old with the new. What some see as a break in the ensemble of the historic city centre, for others embodies a monument of its time.
