With its 146 metres, the O2 Tower (also called Uptown) is Munich's tallest building. In the 1990s, a large number of office towers were built at central transport hubs. The construction of the tower caused a lot of discussion in the city. It culminated in a referendum in 2004. the "Initiative our Munich" called for a halt to several high-rise projects. In addition, high-rise buildings were only to be built outside the Mittlerer Ring and should not exceed the height of Frauenkirche. The view of the Alps must be kept clear. The citizens decided by a narrow majority that future buildings should not tower above the Frauenkirche. The height limit for residential and office buildings was thus 100 metres.
Despite its controversy, the glass tower on Georg-Brauchle-Ring expands the city skyline and is in good company in the immediate vicinity of the Olympic Tower.
