Old Technical Town Hall
The former Technical Town Hall on Blumenstrasse is Munich's first high-rise building. It was built in 1929 during the Great Depression. Its height of 45 meters does not exactly make it a skyscraper. But for Munich's urban architecture of the time, the red building was definitely an unmistakable milestone. The architect Hermann Leitenstorfer had consciously decided against American proportions and stylistic elements. His design came about as a confrontation with the space available at the time and the neighboring buildings. Leitenstorfer's "tower" - in Munich today often referred to simply as "the municipal high-rise" - is today the headquarters of the Department for Urban Planning and Building Regulations.
