The new Munich Central Station
Almost all trains, many underground, suburban trains and trams and many buses stop at Munich Central Station. It is one of Germany's largest passenger railway stations. Rising passenger numbers and the construction of the second main line to upgrade the S-Bahn network make a new building necessary. When the ticket hall and the old canopy of the post-war building were demolished in 2019, an era came to an end.
The joint project between Deutsche Bahn, the Free State of Bavaria and the state capital of Munich includes the new construction of the station building, the Starnberg wing station and the concourse, the redesign of the forecourts and the retaining structure for the prospective connection of the new underground line U9 and the second main line. The station, through which around 450,000 travellers pass every day, is being transformed into a modern transport hub and an even more attractive gateway to the city according to plans by the architectural firm Auer Weber.
As part of the new construction and remodelling of Munich Central Station, the station square and the northern and southern forecourts are also being considered. All three squares are to be redesigned and reorganised in terms of traffic. Last but not least, the two forecourts form the interface to the northern and southern railway station districts.
