Munich’s first high-rise building
The former Technisches Rathaus (Town Hall) on Blumenstrasse is Munich's first high-rise building. It was built in 1929 during the time of the Great Depression. Its 45 metre height does not technically make it a skyscraper, but for Munich's urban architecture at the time the red brick building was still a notable landmark. The architect, Hermann Leitenstorfer, spoke out against American proportions and stylistic elements. His design was therefore the result of an examination of the space available at the time, and the neighbouring buildings. Leitenstorfer's ’tower‘, often referred to today as ’das städtische Hochhaus‘ (the Municipal High Rise), is now the seat of the Department of Urban Planning.
