Synagogue Ohel Jakob
The new Jewish Main Synagogue Ohel Jakob was inaugurated in 2006. The free-standing place of worship on Jakobsplatz faces east. Its mighty sandstone plinth is reminiscent of the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem. A filigree steel and glass construction rises above it. The first letters of the Hebrew alphabet, reminiscent of the Ten Commandments, are carved into the six metre high main portal. Unlike in many Christian churches, it does not serve as an entrance to the interior. You can get there on a guided tour through the corridor of remembrance. The names of 4,500 Munich Jews who were deported and murdered during the National Socialist era are inscribed on backlit glass panels. The corridor leading underground from the Jewish community centre to the synagogue ends in the prayer room. This is decorated with cedar wood from Lebanon and light-coloured Meleke stone. The synagogue seats 500 and is one of the largest synagogue buildings in Europe.
