The old Siemens high-rise, 2023
Siemens High-rise
For some it is the landmark of Munich's south, for others a building sin of the early 1960s. There's no question about it: the former Siemens headquarters on Baierbrunner Straße is polarising - also when it comes to its future use. When it was completed, the 75-metre-high Scheiben skyscraper was the tallest office building in Munich. After it was sold, its conversion into residential space was initially discussed until the city council finally gave the green light for a refurbishment and creation of new office space in 2021. The planned conversion of the 22-storey building will have to make way for the dilapidated glass and aluminium façade for energy reasons. However, the character of the former corporate headquarters is to be preserved. Since Baierbrunner Strasse 54 is a listed building, the façade will be reworked in close consultation with the heritage protection authorities - a recommendation from the commission for urban design. Two extensions will complement the high-rise building. A mobility concept will reduce traffic and the need for parking spaces to a minimum. Existing trees will be preserved as far as possible and new ones planted.
